Popular Band Member Reveals Battle With Rare Skin Disease For 20 Years, “I’ve Had 8 Surgeries”

Popular band member Lee Hong Ki revealed the rare disease he has been suffering from for over 20 years, drawing sympathy from viewers.

On the June 15 broadcast of SBS’s My Little Old Boy, Lee Hong Ki was seen visiting a hospital. As he entered the hospital room, the atmosphere turned serious, and the MCs watching from the studio asked with concern, “What’s going on?”

The doctor, who seemed to have treated Lee Hong Ki before, greeted him by asking, “Is it flaring up again?” Lee Hong Ki replied, “I’ve been feeling uneasy lately. I had a similar sensation in my armpit as before, so I came to get it checked. I also wanted to have my hip looked at.”

Lee Hong Ki is suffering from hidradenitis suppurativa, a chronic inflammatory skin condition. It causes recurring boils and pus-filled nodules in areas such as the armpits and buttocks, where sweat glands are located. The condition often requires repeated surgeries and can leave lasting scars, leading to both physical pain and emotional distress.

Lee Hong Ki said, “I’ve had recurring boils for almost 20 years. I’ve had three surgeries with this doctor, and about eight in total,” he revealed. He calmly recalled the difficult moments, saying, “When I had surgery as a child, it left scars, so I couldn’t go to public baths freely,” expressing the complex and emotional toll it had on him.
