Well-Known Korean Broadcaster Lee Sang Yong Passes Away At 81

Lee Sang Yong, a well-known broadcaster affectionately called “Popeye Uncle,” has passed away at the age of 81.

According to his agency on May 9, “Lee Sang Yong passed away today.”

Earlier that morning, Lee reportedly felt symptoms of a cold and collapsed while returning from a hospital near his home in Seocho-gu, Seoul. He was transported to Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital for emergency treatment but ultimately passed away.

A representative stated, “He had no known health issues. In fact, he even attended an event just yesterday (May 8),” emphasizing that he had no chronic illnesses.

They also added, “The details of the wake are still being discussed with the family.”

Lee Sang Yong gained popularity as the host of Stage of Friendship and earned the nickname “Popeye Uncle.” He was active in a variety of programs such as Let’s Gather and Sing, Popeye’s Paldo Tour, and Let’s Go to the Market.

Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades including the Dongbaek Medal of the Order of Civil Merit (1987), the Kirin Medal of the Order of Sports Merit (1990), a commendation from the Minister of Culture and Tourism (1998), and the TV Star Award at the Cable TV Broadcasting Awards (2014).

He was also widely known for his philanthropic work, having supported over 560 children with heart disease and helping them receive life-saving care.
