Don’t Expect A Live-Action Remake Of “Kpop Demon Hunters,” Director Explains Why

Director Maggie Kang of “Kpop Demon Hunters” has recently been interviewed and revealed the plans for a live action remake have been scrapped.

She recently shared her honest thoughts in an interview with BBC, saying, “I think there are charms that only animation can show. It can define the tone or the comedy of a work, but I simply can’t imagine scenes from ‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ being turned into live action. It would feel too realistic — not my taste.”

Co-director Chris Appelhans also agreed, saying, “Turning ‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ into live action wouldn’t be right. One of the biggest strengths of animation is its ability to combine impossible elements to create something visually new. That’s why LUMI can act like a quirky comedian, suddenly sing, perform a spinning back kick, and even free-fall from the sky.”

He added, “The greatest joy of animation is that imagination has no limits. That’s why I don’t agree with live-action adaptations. Many animated films have been adapted into live action, but most end up feeling unnatural.”

Meanwhile, “Kpop Demon Hunters,” which premiered in June, has become a worldwide sensation. It recently became the most-watched film in Netflix history, and its OST dominated both the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 charts. Remarkably, four songs from the same album entered the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 — a first in history. At the end of August, a “sing-along” version opened in U.S. theaters and grossed 18 million dollars in just one day.

Riding on this global success, a sequel to “Kpop Demon Hunters” is reportedly in discussion. Maggie Kang has expressed her desire to continue the franchise, saying in several interviews, “I want to keep expanding this universe — not only focusing on Huntress’ vocalist LUMI but also exploring the past stories of members JOY and MIRA.”
