“I’m Watching. So, Do Better,” SHINee’s Key Warns Rising SM Rookie Group After Highly Criticized Radio Show Appearance
Recently, NCT WISH (Sion, Riku, Yushi, Jaehee, Ryo, and Sakuya) appeared as guests on an SBS radio show and gained backlash for their attitude!
NCT WISH took part in SBS PowerFM’s “2 O’Clock Escape Cultwo Show” with what some Korean media outlets are labeling “a passive attitude from start to finish.” Although the hosts worked hard, sharing various stories and trying their best to encourage responses from the team, the members reportedly dampened the broadcast atmosphere with quiet voices and what some called “expressionless faces.”
The DJs requested a challenge, but even then, only some of the members participated. The rest just looked at them without any reaction, showing only faint smiles. Senior idol Chuu, who also appeared on the same show with them, was the only one to say “fighting” while raising both arms, supporting and reacting to the member who was trying hard.
In the end, the DJs made pointed remarks such as, “WISH is just completely frozen,” “He [one of the members] was struggling alone,” and “Thank you for promoting despite having such a difficult disposition.”
This episode quickly spread through various online communities and became a hot topic. Many of the opinions criticized the idols arguing they didn’t even show effort. Some netizens have argued its an indication of the so-called “celebrity disease.”
This also tied into the wider discussion and significant criticism about how this is the “typical passive variety show attitude” of idols from large agencies. The idols who lack desperation as their start point is often miles better than their fellow idols from lesser known agencies.
On the other hand, there are some fans defending NCT WISH, mentioning the members’ relatively young age, shy personalities and the language barrier too, since many of the group’s members are Japanese. The fans argue that they lack entertainment sense due to little broadcast experience too because of their rookie status, and that they just don’t have what it takes to be good on variety/radio shows yet.
Interestingly, after the viral broadcast, fellow SM idol SHINee’s Key criticized the group directly for not putting in much effort. He left a message during the live broadcast saying, “I am watching, so do better.”
Key’s comments have also gained mixed responses among fans, some praising him for publicly calling out NCT WISH’s attitude while others said he should be talking to the members privately not airing it out publicly like that. Some also argue that he was too harsh on the young members and that its not how he should approach the topic. Many have also argued that Key is not the person who should be saying this but SM’s staff themselves should be handling this privately.
