NewJeans Accused Of Plagiarism By British Band Shakatak + ADOR Responds
The group NewJeans is currently facing allegations of plagiarizing a song by the British band Shakatak.
This controversy arose after NewJeans pre-released the music video for “Bubble Gum,” a track from their double single “How Sweet,” back in April. The song features a simple drum pattern and a refreshing synth sound, showcasing the members’ vibrant and charming vocals, which quickly gained popularity.
However, after the music video for “Bubble Gum” was released, accusations emerged that its main melody closely resembles Shakatak’s 1982 song “Easier Said Than Done.” Shakatak, a jazz-funk band formed in the UK in 1980, is known for its groovy rhythms and powerful sound.
In response to the claims, Shakatak stated via their official account that they would “look into it carefully” and acknowledged the similarity.
NewJeans’ agency, ADOR, had not initially responded to the allegations. On the 18th of July, it was reported that Shakatak’s representatives had hired a domestic law firm and sent a formal notice demanding that ADOR stop using “Bubble Gum” and compensate for damages.
According to reports, Wise Music Group, the rights holder of “Easier Said Than Done,” sent an official protest to ADOR and HYBE in mid-June, asserting that “Bubble Gum” infringes on their copyright and demanding immediate action, including the cessation of its use.
In response, ADOR stated to OSEN that they had replied to Shakatak’s formal notice on the 21st of last month. ADOR explained that they requested Shakatak to provide a credible analysis report proving the plagiarism claim, asserting that “Bubble Gum” did not unlawfully use Shakatak’s composition.
ADOR emphasized that Shakatak’s representatives had agreed to provide the report soon, but it has not yet been received. They stressed that it is up to Shakatak to prove the plagiarism claim with a report.
As the plagiarism controversy surrounding NewJeans resurfaces, both parties maintain their respective stances, and the outcome of this dispute remains to be seen.
