NewJeans’ Hanni Gets Reported For Allegedly Overstaying Her Visa, The Immigration Office Issues Response
Hanni, a member of the group NewJeans, has been reported for an alleged overstay issue.
An anonymous citizen recently filed a complaint regarding Hani’s visa status with the National Sinmungo (public petition system). On the 10th of January, the Ministry of Justice’s Seoul Immigration Office Investigation Division stated, “We will take the necessary measures once the employment relationship between the concerned parties is resolved.”
Hanni holds dual citizenship in Australia and Vietnam. To continue staying and working in Korea, she requires an extended E-6 visa, which is issued for artistic and entertainment activities. Currently, foreign entertainers in Korea generally operate under this visa category.
The E-6 visa is typically issued for one year and must be renewed annually by the entertainer’s agency. Hanni’s visa, issued through ADOR, reportedly expired earlier this year.
Given Hanni’s ongoing contract dispute with ADOR, concerns were raised about potential issues with her visa renewal. Since visa renewal requires agency involvement, the dispute with ADOR makes it challenging to request their assistance, and finding a new agency during the conflict is also problematic.
In response to the overstay report, the Seoul Immigration Office commented, “We cannot provide details about an individual’s potential violations of the Immigration Control Act as reported by a third party.”
They added, “For foreign entertainers staying on an E-6 visa, the immigration office determines their residency status and duration based on their employment contracts with domestic agencies. Measures will be taken accordingly once the employment relationship between the parties is clarified.”
