Prosecution Requests A Prison Sentence Against Former Kpop Idol Who Violated Probation With Another DUI
Nam Tae Hyun has been requested by prosecutors to receive a sentence of 1 year and 6 months in prison and a fine of 1 million won [$665] for drunk driving.
On the afternoon of the 12th of March, the Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Western District Court held the second trial hearing for Nam Tae Hyun, who was indicted on charges including violation of the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving).
During the hearing, prosecutors requested a sentence of 1 year and 6 months in prison and a fine of 1 million won, considering that Nam Tae Hyun had prior punishment for a similar offense, drove with a high blood alcohol concentration at extremely high speed, and was caught during a probation period.
Nam Tae Hyun is accused of drinking alcohol and causing an accident at around 4:10 AM on April 27 last year near Dongjak Bridge on the Gangbyeonbuk-ro while heading toward Ilsan. He attempted to overtake a vehicle in front of him but crashed into the central divider. He was reportedly driving at 182 km/h, far exceeding the road’s speed limit of 80 km/h.
There were no casualties from the accident, but his blood alcohol concentration at the time was reported to be 0.122%, which exceeds the license cancellation threshold of 0.08%.
Yongsan Police Station transferred Nam Tae Hyun to prosecutors without detention in May last year, and the Seoul Western District Prosecutors Office indicted him without detention in July of the same year. During the first trial held on December 11 last year, he admitted to all the charges.
This is not Nam Tae Hyun’s first drunk driving offense. In 2023, he also received a summary fine of 6 million won for drunk driving.
Notably, he had been caught for drunk driving in 2023 while under investigation for drug-related charges, and this latest incident also occurred during the probation period related to his drug use case.
