Rapper Lee Young Ji Issues Apology Over Recent Posts After Being Embroiled In Political Controversy
Rapper Lee Young Ji has apologized after becoming embroiled in a political controversy over social media posts shared during the early voting period for South Korea’s June 3 local elections.
The controversy began after Lee Young Ji uploaded photos of herself with bright red hair, writing, “Isn’t my hair color pretty?” She also used the song REDRED by CORTIS as background music and later posted additional photos wearing a red top.
Some online users argued that the red color scheme could be interpreted as support for a specific political party during the election period. As criticism grew, Lee Young Ji deleted the posts.
On May 31, Lee Young Ji shared a photo showing her newly dyed black hair and wrote, “Many of you were surprised by the untimely story I uploaded yesterday. After receiving numerous DMs informing me of the issue, I felt sorry and rushed to dye my hair in an attempt to address the situation, which is why my explanation came late. I apologize.”
She continued, “Even though I was fully aware that this is an important period, I think my desire to communicate with fans came first, and I carelessly uploaded recent photos without much thought. I won’t hide behind the excuse of ignorance. I will reflect on my actions and learn from this. I’m sorry for my thoughtless behavior.”
A similar incident previously involved television personality Hong Jin Kyung, who faced criticism after posting photos wearing red clothing one day before South Korea’s 21st presidential election vote.
At the time, Hong Jin Kyung issued a handwritten apology, writing, “I’ve often felt sorry seeing celebrities unintentionally cause misunderstandings with their actions during election periods, and I can’t believe I’ve made such a foolish mistake myself during such a sensitive time.”
She also stated, “Having spent so much time overseas and away from everyday life in Korea, I think I lost my sense of awareness. Regardless of the reason, this was entirely my fault. I have no excuse, and I sincerely apologize.”
