Red Velvet’s Wendy and Yeri are officially parting ways with SM Entertainment.

On April 4, SM Entertainment released an official statement announcing the conclusion of their exclusive contracts with the two members, however, both members shall remain with the group. The agency stated,

“We would like to inform you that our exclusive contracts with Wendy and Yeri have come to an end.”

SM continued,

“The time we’ve spent with Wendy and Yeri, who debuted as members of Red Velvet and have also shined as solo artists in various fields, has brought us great joy. We will cherish every moment we’ve built together and sincerely support their new beginnings.”

They added,

“Wendy and Yeri will continue to carry out group activities as members of Red Velvet with SM Entertainment. We ask for your continued love and anticipation for the dazzling journey of Red Velvet that lies ahead.

We deeply thank you for the unwavering love you’ve shown to Wendy and Yeri until now, and we hope you’ll continue to show warm support for their upcoming challenges in their respective paths.”

Wendy debuted as an original member of Red Velvet in August 2014 with “Happiness,” while Yeri joined the group in 2015 with “Ice Cream Cake.” The group went on to release many hit songs including “Red Flavor,” “Psycho,” “Feel My Rhythm,” and most recently, “Cosmic.”

Aside from group promotions, both members have been active individually. Yeri made her acting debut through a tvN drama and went on to star in projects like “Blue Birthday” and “Cheongdam International High School,” building her name as an actress. Wendy pursued her solo music career with songs such as “Wish You Hell.”

Their departure marks the end of their individual contracts with SM but not their time with Red Velvet, as both will continue group promotions under the agency.

Are you surprised by their decision?
