Famous SM Boy Group Member Shocks With Racially Insensitive Use Of Word To Describe His Tanning As A Kid, Issues Apology
Eunseok of RIIZE has apologized over an expression that sparked controversy for being racially insensitive.
The controversial remark was made on the 5th of May. In celebration of Children’s Day, Eunseok shared photos from his childhood. During the process, he used the expression “kkamdungi Eunseok.”
The word has been used to describe someone with dark skin or a dark complexion. However, many compare it to the use of the word “Blackie” which triggered massive backlash.
The message was deleted shortly after it was sent. However, controversy continued to spread, particularly among international fans, with criticism arising that the term could be interpreted as a racially derogatory expression toward Black people.
On the 6th of May, Eunseok posted a lengthy apology on the fan communication platform Bubble. He admitted, “I used an inappropriate expression while sharing a childhood photo of myself.”
He continued, “I apologize to those who may have felt uncomfortable because of my inappropriate choice of words,” adding, “I realized my mistake and deleted it immediately, but my heart still feels heavy.”
He also promised not to repeat the same mistake. “I will think and act more carefully in the future. I sincerely apologize,” he said once again while bowing his head in apology.
Meanwhile, RIIZE is set to make their comeback next month on the 15th with a new mini album.
