Several A-List Kpop Idols Donate And Speak Up About Hong Kong’s Tragic Fire Incident That Claimed The Lives Of At Least 75 People
As large-scale fire damage occurred in Hong Kong, K-pop groups such as aespa and RIIZE, as well as the “2025 MAMA Awards,” which is preparing to be held locally, are continuing donations and mourning.
On the 26th of November (local time), due to a fire that occurred at a high-rise apartment in Hong Kong, at least 75 people died and more than 250 people went missing. As of 6 p.m. on the 27th, 27 hours after the fire occurred, the fire across all seven apartment buildings was extinguished. Hong Kong authorities raised the fire alert to the highest level, Level 5.
The “MAMA Awards,” which will be held on the 28th–29th for two days at Hong Kong Kai Tak Stadium, decided to proceed with the event after long deliberation. CJ ENM said in the afternoon of the day, “We express deep condolences to those who were killed in the fire accident that occurred in Hong Kong. We deliver sincere comfort to all those, including the bereaved families, who are experiencing great loss and anxiety,” and said, “‘MAMA’ will add the message ‘Support Hong Kong’ to prepare time to share the sadness together and mourn, and plans to contribute strength through donations to support the victims.”
aespa and RIIZE immediately donated funds asking for them to be used for rescue and follow-up work. aespa said on their official Weibo, “Regarding the heartbreaking news, we express our deep sorrow. We decided to donate 500,000 Hong Kong dollars (about $64,271 ) in the name of aespa to the Hong Kong Red Cross Society of China. We hope we can add strength and pray for everyone’s peace.”
RIIZE made donations together with the name of their fandom. On the same day, they said on Weibo, “Our hearts became heavy after hearing the sad news. We decided to donate 250,000 Hong Kong dollars (about $32,135 ) in the names of RIIZE and BRIIZE (fandom name) to the Red Cross Society of China Hong Kong.”
Their agency, SM Entertainment, also announced that it donated 1 million Hong Kong dollars (about $128,543 ) to the Red Cross Society of China Hong Kong and decided to support work such as local fire rescue, follow-up temporary placement, and supply of living materials.
i-dle ’s member Yuqi left on her SNS in Chinese, “I hope everyone is safe.” Additionally, i-dle also donated 1 million Hong Kong dollars.
GOT7’s Jackson, who is from Hong Kong, posted major evacuation shelters in Hong Kong on SNS and wrote, “Please share this. This is what is happening in Hong Kong.”
