BREAKING: Singer Wheesung Passes Away At 43
Singer Wheesung (Choi Wheesung, 43) has been found deceased.
According to police and fire authorities on the 10th of March, Wheesung was found dead at an apartment in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, at around 6:29 PM.
Authorities believe a significant amount of time had passed since his death before he was discovered. They stated, “So far, no signs of external intrusion or criminal activity have been found. The presence of a suicide note and the exact cause of death are under investigation.”
His agency released an official statement: “The late Wheesung was found in a state of cardiac arrest at his home in Seoul and was pronounced deceased. His sudden passing has left his family, colleagues at our agency, and staff in deep grief.”
They continued, “It deeply pains us to deliver such heartbreaking news to the fans who have always shown unwavering love and support for Wheesung. We ask for your prayers so that he may rest in peace.”
Born in 1982, Wheesung debuted in 2002 with his first studio album, Like a Movie. His title track Can’t We? became a massive hit, propelling him to stardom and earning him multiple rookie awards.
He went on to release numerous hit songs across the years. His distinctive vocal style played a major role in popularizing R&B in Korea.
In addition to his singing career, Wheesung also showcased his talent as a lyricist, contributing to hit songs by famous singers such as Younha, Lee Hyori, T-ara, Orange Caramel and TWICE’s Dance the Night Away.
However, despite his success, Wheesung faced legal issues in 2021 when he was sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year probation period, 40 hours of community service, and 40 hours of drug treatment lectures for habitual propofol use (in violation of the Narcotics Control Act). He had been accused of repeatedly using the psychoactive sedative between September and November 2019.
In 2020, he also caused controversy after being found unconscious twice due to the use of etomidate, a sleep-inducing anesthetic. Since etomidate is not classified as a controlled substance, its purchase was not illegal, and he was not charged.
After a period of reflection, Wheesung resumed his activities, releasing new music and holding concerts to reconnect with fans. He was scheduled to perform in The Story, a joint concert with singer KCM, at the EXCO Auditorium in Daegu on the 15th. However, his passing, just five days before the event, has left fans devastated.
Moreover, he had been actively communicating with fans as recently as the 6th of March through social media, making the news even more shocking. Many fans have expressed their deep sorrow and condolences, mourning the loss of the beloved artist.
