The Korean President Declares Martial Law, Entertainment Agencies Instructed To Cancel Festivals And Events Nationwide, All Major Drama Award Shows At End Of Year Facing Cancellation
On December 3, President Yoon Suk Yeol declared a state of martial law in South Korea, leading to widespread cancellations of festivals and events nationwide.
This sudden development has caused significant uncertainty within the entertainment industry, with concerns over whether year-end concerts, award shows and fan events will proceed as planned. The situation has been described as a major blow to the entertainment sector as the year comes to a close.
According to reports, major entertainment companies have begun notifying their artists to halt participation in events starting December 4, citing concerns over potential repercussions during a martial law period. Regional festivals and local government-organized events are expected to face inevitable cancellations.
Private events such as concerts, fan meetings, and company-hosted functions are also under scrutiny. Entertainment industry representatives are closely monitoring the situation, as there are no recent precedents to guide responses to such a declaration. The last time this happened was in 1980.
Additionally, several entertainment insiders revealed to Ten Asia that they had received urgent notifications stating the suspension of these ceremonies. Furthermore, many entertainment companies have reportedly instructed their employees to work from home due to the emergency situation.
An executive from an entertainment company remarked that they are treating the situation as a critical emergency.
Then later, 190 of 190 legislators who attended the emergency parliament session unanimously approved the resolution request to lift martial law. The president must lift the martial law when the majority approves according to the law. The declaration has been ruled invalid, however, a report from YTN says the police are siding with the president and will not lift the martial law until the president lifts it causing even more confusion and uncertainty.
As of this writing, its uncertain whether any end year ceremony including drama and entertainment awards will be held per schedule.
