Famous Idol Gets Criticized For Insensitive Remarks About Japan’s Recent Earthquake, Issues Apology

SHINee‘s Taemin has issued an apology after facing backlash for his careless comments regarding earthquakes in Japan, especially as public anxiety grows due to ongoing rumors of a major quake.

Taemin is currently in Japan for a scheduled broadcast and appeared in a live SNS broadcast with fellow SHINee member Minho on July 5. During the livestream, he addressed the so-called “July Great Earthquake Prophecy” and said, “That prediction isn’t happening yet, so don’t worry too much.”

He also added jokingly, “What if it shakes while I’m singing?”, “Would it be cool if the venue started shaking?”, and “What if it feels like 3D when the stage shakes during a performance?”

These remarks drew criticism for being insensitive in light of public concern in Japan. The fear was sparked by Japanese manga artist Ryo Tatsuki’s controversial prediction. In the 2021 reprint of her comic “The Future I Saw: Complete Edition,” she claimed that “a real disaster will happen in July 2025.”

On July 6, Taemin took to Instagram to say, “I sincerely apologize for speaking carelessly about the earthquake while trying to reassure fans who were worried.
I am currently reflecting on my thoughtless words, realizing I failed to fully consider the seriousness of the situation for those currently affected and the potential dangers of natural disasters.”

As the panic spread, Taemin’s lighthearted comments were seen as lacking awareness of the gravity of natural disasters. He concluded his statement by saying, “I, too, was very worried and am hoping that everyone gets through this without major damage. Moving forward, I will be more careful and thoughtful in both my words and actions.”
