TWICE’s Jeongyeon Reveals She’s Been Diagnosed With “Cushing Syndrome,” Tears Up Recalling Her Sister Gong Seung Yeon’s Support
TWICE member Jeongyeon was moved to tears as she expressed heartfelt gratitude toward her older sister, actress Gong Seung Yeon.
On the 17th of May, tvN’s variety program “You Quiz on the Block” released a short video through its official channel titled, “Jeongyeon’s hardest time. Gong Seung Yeon, who always stood by her as a pillar of support.”
In the video, Jeongyeon opened up emotionally about her sister, who appeared as a guest on the show. She recalled the period in 2020 when she temporarily halted her activities due to health issues, saying, “I relied a lot on my sister. It was a mentally very difficult time, and she held me and told me, ‘Something seems wrong with your body. I think you need to go to the hospital,’ and that’s how I was properly diagnosed.”
She continued, “It was my first time hearing the word Cushing’s syndrome, and thanks to my sister I was able to receive treatment properly and recover my health. I was really grateful.”
Jeongyeon added emotionally, “I’m also so happy that my sister is doing so well and becoming so popular these days. I’m really thankful that you are my real sister. I’m getting emotional. Thank you, and I’m sorry,” as she broke into tears.
According to the National Institute of Health, Cushing’s syndrome is a hormonal disorder caused by prolonged exposure to excess cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. It is most commonly triggered by the long-term use of high-dose steroid medications, but can also result from pituitary or adrenal gland tumor.
Watching the video, Gong Seung Yeon also became tearful. She said with a laugh while wiping her tears, “I didn’t expect to hear something like this. Sorry for hitting you,” lightening the emotional mood.
Gong Seung Yeon also reflected on the difficult period, saying, “Back then, Jeongyeon was going through such a hard time that I couldn’t bear leaving her alone. Even when she stayed in the dorm, I kept going there, and eventually had her stay at my house. I just wanted her by my side all the time, so I suggested we live together.”
She concluded with deep affection, “I’m so thankful that she overcame it. It makes me so happy to hear people say she’s gotten even prettier and is back in her prime. She’s someone who does everything properly and does it well, so I believe in her completely.”
