K-Pop Idol Apologizes To Fan For Saying She Looks Like A Mole Rat At Past Fan Meeting
Block B’s U-Kwon has directly apologized after an old comment he made to a fan resurfaced online more than a decade later.
On August 19th, an online user identified as A shared a Reels video on social media, writing, “Anyone here who’s gone to a fan sign and been told by an idol that they look like a naked mole rat? Was he just tired from a packed schedule, or did he just want to take it out on someone?”
In the video, A explained, “I really loved Block B, so I went to a fan signing about 12 years ago.” She continued, “Back then, you could write a question on a Post-it at fan signs, and even though he wasn’t my bias, I figured since I was already there, it’d be nice to get an answer written back to me.”
She said she had written the question, “What animal do I look like?” at the time, and the member reportedly wrote back, “Naked mole rat.”
She said, “I wasn’t really that hurt by it. I wasn’t that interested in him,” adding, “He was known for being pretty rude back then, so I figured as long as he had a decent amount of attitude it’d be fine, but he was way too rude.” She went on, “He left a nasty comment calling a 15-year-old a naked mole rat. And that naked mole rat is doing just fine now.”
As the video spread, comments speculated that the member in question was U-Kwon. Some reactions included, “Wasn’t that around the time he had a girlfriend and was extra sensitive?” “I was a fan of a different idol group and even I knew he was famous for being rude,” and “I knew it was U-Kwon the second I saw it.”
Not long after, U-Kwon himself showed up in the comments, writing, “No excuses, I’m sorry…..”
With the person behind the “naked mole rat” comment finally revealed and owning up to it cleanly after 12 years, what could have turned into a sharper controversy instead wrapped up on a lighthearted note. Fans and online users found humor in U-Kwon’s response, which was short and honest rather than a long explanation or excuse.
Meanwhile, U-Kwon debuted with Block B in 2011 and won public affection through hits like “Nalina,” “Nillili Mambo,” “HER,” and “Toy.” He has since expanded into solo activities and musical theater, and is currently appearing in the musical “Dream High” as part of his ongoing stage career.
