Woodz Opens Up About His Father’s Sudden Death Abroad

Woodz shared that he misses his father, who suddenly passed away abroad.

On the most recent broadcast of the variety show You Quiz on the Block, Woodz, a singer in his 12th year since debut who created a reverse-charting success story, appeared as a guest.

Woodz said his father passed away when he was 21. He recalled, “I got a call from my mother, and the feeling was strange. When I answered, she said ‘Don’t be surprised and listen,’ and the moment she said that, I thought something had gone wrong. She said my father had passed away. I said I would go home first.”

Woodz’s parents divorced when he was in elementary school. His father lived in the Philippines. He said, “Honestly, even now I don’t know the cause of my father’s death. I only know that he passed away overseas in the Philippines.”

He continued, “First, I had to bring my father to Korea. Since the body couldn’t be brought back, I asked for cremation. I held the urn and looked around the Philippines where I had lived with my father, and then I hugged the urn and came back to Korea.”

Woodz also shared that he studied abroad in the Philippines at the age of 15 and lived with his father while attending an international school. He said, “I thought it made no sense that my father, who was such a big presence, was inside this small container. I couldn’t believe it and it didn’t feel real.”

He added, “I sent my father off at a temple. When you send someone off at a temple, at the end you call their name three times as a way of saying goodbye to this world. When I called his name three times, it really felt like he was no longer a person of this world. At that time it just felt like pure pain, but as I got older I feel my father’s absence a lot more.”

Woodz described his father by saying, “He was someone full of romance. He said he wanted to ride a Harley motorcycle with me and travel all around the country. He also said that when I became an adult we should get a couple tattoo together. My father had his own sense of romance, and through that he planted my own sense of romance as well.”
