A JYP Idol Shockingly Discusses Eugenics Ideologies, Receives Immense Backlash, Both The Idol And JYP Issue Apologies
JYP Entertainment and Xdinary Heroes member Jun Han have issued official apologies after Jun Han made controversial remarks that were criticized for evoking eugenics ideologies.
The controversy began when Jun Han responded to a fan’s message about PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) research. He asked, “If it’s gene amplification technology, can you amplify only good genes to treat diseases?” He then added, “I heard Black people have more cells in their ears and better hearing, so they’re good at music. I was really envious. Is it possible to combine the advantages of different races — White people’s abilities, Black people’s physiques, and Asian people’s intelligence? I know it’s already being done, but it’s ethically controversial.”
After facing backlash for his comments, which many likened to eugenics ideologies similar to those promoted by Nazi Germany, Jun Han stated, “If someone thinks it’s ethically wrong, they shouldn’t do it. Those who want to can do it on their own.”
Eugenics is a theory that promotes the idea of “superior” genetic traits and has historically been used to justify racial discrimination and selective breeding. The ideology gained traction in the West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was used to compare racial groups based on arbitrary criteria like brain weight.
Later, On June 29, Jun Han took to the group’s official social media to apologize, stating, “I sincerely apologize for my careless remarks that caused deep hurt and discomfort to many people. I’ve come to realize that what I said reflected a biased perspective. I deeply reflect on my lack of historical and social awareness and sensitivity.”
He continued, “To those who were hurt or felt uncomfortable due to my lack of understanding, I sincerely bow my head in apology. I will continuously strive to learn and change so that I can act based on proper knowledge in the future. I will treat every word and action with more caution and responsibility going forward. Once again, I sincerely apologize.”
Shortly afterward, JYP Entertainment also released a statement apologizing for the controversy. “We sincerely apologize to everyone who was hurt by our artist Jun Han’s careless remarks on a fan communication platform. Jun Han is taking the issue very seriously and is deeply remorseful for the hurt and disappointment his words caused.”
JYP added, “We take responsibility for the shortcomings in our artist training and will take even greater care to prevent such issues from happening again. We will thoroughly educate our artists on social awareness, sensitivity, and responsible public communication so they can demonstrate mature and proper values.”
