Popular Idol Comes Out As Transmasculine Non-Binary After Undergoing Surgery
Cocona (20·real name Akiyama Cocona), a Japanese member of the girl group XG, revealed both the fact that she underwent “breast removal surgery” and her gender identity.
On the 6th of December, Cocona stated on XG’s official Instagram account that her gender identity is “AFAB Transmasculine non-binary.” AFAB (Assigned Female At Birth) transmasculine non-binary refers to someone who was designated female at birth but does not define themselves solely as a woman and identifies closer to masculinity or somewhere on that spectrum.
Cocona said, “Hi, this is Cocona. Today, I turned 20. As I reach this new chapter in my life, I want to share something that’s been in my heart for a long time. I am AFAB transmasculine non-binary. Earlier this year, I had top surgery. I was born and perceived as female, but that label never represented who I truly am. I live in a way that feels more masculine and true to who I am.”
Along with this, Cocona posted revealing photos showing clear surgical scars on the chest, drawing attention.
Cocona continued, “The hardest thing I’ve ever faced was accepting and embracing myself. But as I slowly began to do that, I was able to open a new door. That moment changed the way I see and understand the world, and it gave me the courage and strength to grow.
Now, I can finally say, “There’s nothing wrong with who I am inside.” I was only able to come this far because of the people who listened and stood by me —my members, Simon-san, and my parents. I’m truly grateful for this path, and for every miracle that brought us together.”
JAKOPS, XG’s general producer and CEO of their company, also sent a message of support that day, saying, “Today, as Cocona gathered the courage to share her heart with the world, I am filled with sincere emotion and deep respect.”
XG debuted in the music industry in 2022. All seven members are Japanese, but the group was produced based on the K-pop system. They trained under XGALX, the Korean branch of the major Japanese entertainment company Avex Group, and are currently active.
