One Of The Biggest National Korean Actors, Ahn Sung Ki, Passes Away
Beloved national actor Ahn Sung Ki has passed away on the 5th at the age of 74.]
At around 9 a.m. on the 5th of January, actor Ahn Sung Ki passed away while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at Soonchunhyang University Hospital in Yongsan, Seoul, with his family by his side. He was 74 years old.
Previously, on the 30th of last month, Ahn Sung Ki collapsed at his home after food became lodged in his throat and was hospitalized in the ICU in an unconscious state. His eldest son, Ahn Da Bin, who had been staying in the United States, rushed back to Korea on the 2nd to be with his father in his final moments.
Ahn Da Bin is known to have remained by his father’s side throughout his battle with blood cancer. Their particularly close father-son bond has deeply moved many, as seen in the way Ahn Da Bin remembered his father.
One day before Ahn Sung Ki’s passing, on the 4th, Ahn Da Bin posted a photo book from his father’s starring film “I Want to Go to That Island” on his personal account, paying tribute to his father as he was nearing the end of his life.
Ahn Sung Ki made his debut in 1957 with director Kim Ki Young’s film “Twilight Train,” and went on to appear in more than 140 works over roughly 60 years, remaining active until the early 2020s. He was widely regarded as one of Korea’s most representative and respected actors.
He had been battling blood cancer since 2019 and first revealed his illness through a media interview in 2022. Even during his treatment, he showed his determination to return by making public appearances, including at the opening ceremony of the 27th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in 2023 and the April 19 Democratic Peace Prize awards ceremony.
