Beloved Korean Director Shin Sun Hoon’s Death Revealed 5 Months After His Passing

Film director Shin Sung Hoon’s passing in May was revealed belatedly. He was 40 years old.

According to OSEN’s report on the 26^th of October, Shin Sung Hoon passed away in May. A source in the entertainment industry stated, “We heard the news at the end of May. Since he had no known family, his body was handled as unclaimed and a funeral was held accordingly.”

As previously reported by Ilgan Sports, police were dispatched to the scene following a report from an acquaintance, and no suicide note was found. It was also shared that he had no known underlying health conditions.

The source told OSEN, “During his life, he often posted photos on social media referring to people as ‘mom’ or ‘family,’ but they were not his real family. He would call older acquaintances ‘mom’ and followed them affectionately,” adding to the sadness surrounding his passing.

The sorrow surrounding Shin Sung Hoon’s death is also reflected in his social media activity before his passing. His profile reportedly contained the phrase “D-day today… Beautiful Day.”

Last year, the director had shocked many by distributing a press release that hinted at suicidal thoughts. At the time, he wrote, “The emotional wounds I received from people are too deep. The process of making films feels too heavy,” even mentioning that he was considering emigration. His repeated expressions of pain before ultimately passing away.

Shin Sung Hoon debuted as a singer in 2002 and continued his career in the entertainment industry. In 2022, he gained recognition as a director after his film Thank You for the Jjajangmyeon won Best Director and Best Picture at the 7th Hollywood Bluebird Film Festival. The film went on to win numerous awards at various film festivals. His later works, including Minors (released last year) and God’s Choice (released this year), also received recognition at prestigious international festivals, earning him praise as a rising filmmaker.

He had been actively preparing more projects, including works for OTT platforms, but tragically passed away before completing his final film Minors 2. According to the production company, the film is currently in post-production and will be released later this year in honor of the late director’s wishes.
