Gong Seung Yeon’s Appearance On One Of The Biggest Variety Shows Leaves Out All Mentions Of “Perfect Crown,” Is It Due To Its Controversy?
Actress Gong Seung Yeon’s appearance on tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block” drew attention after references to her drama “Perfect Crown,” which had recently been embroiled in historical distortion controversy, were noticeably removed from the broadcast.
In the episode aired on the 21st of May, Gong Seung Yeon appeared as a guest and shared various stories, including anecdotes about her younger sister, TWICE’s Jeongyeon, and her long trainee period before debut. However, any mention of her recent drama “Perfect Crown” was completely edited out.
In previously released preview footage, host Yoo Jae Suk introduced her by saying she had “reached a new peak after 15 years thanks to ‘Perfect Crown,’” and Gong Seung Yeon herself was seen saying she would “hop on the train with IU and Byun Woo Seok.” This led to expectations that she would share behind-the-scenes stories about the drama following its conclusion.
However, the actual broadcast differed significantly. Yoo Jae Suk’s introduction omitted the drama title, and captions referencing the series in the preview were replaced with different wording. As a result, viewers speculated that all discussion related to the drama had been entirely cut.
Gong Seung Yeon received praise for her role as Yoon I Rang in the series, and her appearance on the show was reportedly made possible due to the drama’s popularity. However, following the recent controversy surrounding the show, the broadcast appeared to be affected. Her screen time was also relatively short at around 20 minutes, shorter than fellow guests actor Yoo Seung Mok and singer Rain.
“Perfect Crown” concluded with strong ratings and high public interest, but controversy arose following the episode 11 coronation scene aired on the 15th. In the scene, Prince Yi An (played by Byun Woo Seok) wore a gu-ryu myeollyeongwan, traditionally used by feudal lords of China, instead of the twelve-jeob myeollyeongwan worn by emperors. Additionally, court officials used the term “cheonse,” which is traditionally reserved for subordinate rulers rather than sovereign emperors, prompting accusations of historical distortion.
As the controversy grew, IU and Byun Woo Seok each issued handwritten apology letters, and director Park Jun Hwa and writer Yoo Ji Won also issued official apologies.
