Gong Yoo And Seo Hyun Jin Discuss The 19+ Bed Scene In “The Trunk”
Actors Seo Hyun Jin and Gong Yoo showed confidence about taking on bed scenes in their project.
Recently, a press conference for Netflix’s original series “The Trunk” was held. During the conference, the actors and director discussed many things including the characters, the provocative subject of the drama as well as the bed scene
Director Kim Gyu Tae shared his thoughts on taking on the direction of “The Trunk,” saying, “I started working on this project from its early planning stages.” He added, “When I first received the script, I was honestly a bit taken aback. It was undoubtedly fun but also strange, fresh, novelistic, and literary. The characters’ psychology and relationships weren’t easy to grasp. I found myself drawn into the project out of curiosity, wondering, ‘What is this?’ Over time, I empathized with the characters and their dynamics. It’s a uniquely charming piece.”
Seo Hyun Jin plays No In Ji, a woman left alone because of marriage. Though she finds marriage detestable, she works in the industry and meets her fifth husband, Han Jeong Won, through a temporary marriage matching service. Seo described the character as having a void and desolation in her inner self, portraying this with a subtle yet powerful transformation. She noted, “It’s a piece with a lot of subtext and spaces to interpret. Depending on how it’s portrayed and who does it, it could change, so I really wanted to take on this role.” She further likened No In Ji to a “hermit crab,” hiding her soft inner self under a hard exterior.
Gong Yoo portrays Han Jeong Won, a music producer who becomes extremely lonely after marriage. He is a character consumed by anxiety and loneliness due to childhood trauma, eventually agreeing to a temporary marriage against his will. Gong Yoo said, “The original concept of the work was appealing. Love and its trajectory are different depending on the perspective, leading to varied interpretations.”
Seo Hyun Jin stated, “If it wasn’t something necessary for the character, I didn’t think it would be requested. That aspect wasn’t much of an issue.”
Gong Yoo shared, “More than bed or love scenes, there was a solo shower scene I had to do,” and humorously recounted, “I wasn’t in shape, so I rushed to eat only vegetables for two weeks,” drawing laughter. Seo Hyun Jin jokingly revealed, “That’s why he said he wanted to shoot it again,” causing more laughs.
Gong Yoo added, “As extra TMI, it may look like I’m completely undressed in the shower scene, but I’m not,” clarifying and continuing the lighthearted tone.
Director Kim Gyu Tae, discussing the nudity in the drama, explained, “The bed scene was necessary to authentically portray the characters’ emotions and relationship dynamics. It was shot at an appropriate level, ensuring it didn’t appear overly provocative.”

The series “The Trunk” is a mystery-melodrama about a secretive marriage service revealed after a trunk is found by the lakeside, exploring the peculiar contractual marriage of two individuals carrying emotional scars. It premiered on Netflix on November 29.
