Prosecutors Seek A 3-Year Sentence For Famous Actress For Charges Of Embezzlement Of Her Company Funds
Prosecutors have sought a three-year prison sentence for actress Hwang Jung Eum, who has been indicted on charges of embezzling 4.3 billion won in company funds.
Recently, the Jeju District Court’s Criminal Division 2 (Presiding Judge Im Jae Nam) held the second and final hearing in the case concerning violations of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (embezzlement). Prosecutors requested the court to sentence Hwang Jung Eum to three years in prison.
According to the indictment, around early 2022, Hwang received 700 million won [$501,578] from her agency—which had taken out a loan—under the pretext of temporary payments and invested the money in cryptocurrency. She was indicted without detention for allegedly embezzling a total of approximately 4.34 billion won [$3,081,124] by December 2022.
It was confirmed that the victimized agency is a family-run company in which Hwang Jung Eum owns 100% of the shares. Of the embezzled amount, about 4.2 billion won was reportedly invested in cryptocurrency.
Hwang Jung Eum acknowledged all charges during the first hearing on May 15 and subsequently repaid all amounts withdrawn from the company as temporary payments in hearings on May 30 and June 5.

Meanwhile, Hwang Jung Eum’s sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place in September.
