“Signal” Season 2 In Complete Meltdown Over Main Actor’s Shocking Retirement Announcement, What Now? Will It Ever Air?
After Actor Cho Jin Woong acknowledged his criminal record as a minor and announced retirement, the tvN blockbuster “Signal 2” is at serious risk.
The problem is that all episodes have already been 100% filmed, and post-production is well underway. While the controversy surrounding the lead actor would normally require major revisions to the footage, industry insiders point out that both editing and reshooting are realistically impossible.

“The Second Signal” is the second season of “Signal,” which aired in 2016 and gained widespread popularity domestically and internationally. Filming began earlier this year with the goal of a 2026 release, and all shooting has recently been completed. Writer Kim Eun Hee returned to script the series, and original cast members Kim Hye Soo, Lee Je Hoon, and Cho Jin Woong reunited after 10 years, making it one of tvN’s largest projects in celebration of its 20th anniversary. However, the explosive spread of Cho Jin Woong’s past controversy has created an unprecedented crisis, putting the entire production in jeopardy.
Cho Jin Woong plays the central character Lee Jae Han, who drives the narrative of season two and has the most screen time. A broadcasting source stated, “Cho Jin Woong is not a supporting actor but the core of the story. His screen time is so extensive that partial editing cannot resolve the issue. At this stage, removing the lead entirely is physically impossible.” Reshooting is also impractical, as it would require coordinating schedules of top actors like Kim Hye Soo and Lee Je Hoon and reinvesting hundreds of millions of won in production costs, which industry consensus deems unfeasible.
Ultimately, there are three main options: air the drama as planned, postpone its release, or adjust the release method to an OTT-only platform. Regardless of the choice, fallout is inevitable. Broadcasting as scheduled risks public criticism toward Cho Jin Woong, postponing the release would cause massive losses to the production company, broadcaster, and advertisers, and an OTT-only release would diminish the symbolic significance of tvN’s 20th-anniversary project. Complete cancellation is widely considered nearly impossible.
Fan reaction has also been intense. “Signal” had a strong fandom, with persistent requests for a sequel over the past 10 years, and the announcement of season two alone had generated huge anticipation. With the lead actor’s past controversy casting uncertainty on the project’s future, fans have expressed frustration.
tvN is reportedly assessing the situation and preparing an official statement. However, with all filming completed and the lead actor effectively stepping down, this situation is expected to go down as unprecedented in the history of Korean drama production. Industry attention is focused on whether “The Second Signal” will reach viewers in some form or if the entire plan will be disrupted.
