Yoo Ah In’s Detention Extended as He Awaits Appeal in Drug Use Case
Actor Yoo Ah In, who is facing charges of habitual drug use, has had his detention period extended by two months ahead of his appeal trial.
According to legal sources on the 18th of October, the Seoul High Court’s Criminal Division 5 extended Yoo Ah In’s detention by two months on the 17th in relation to his charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act (psychotropic drugs). Under the Criminal Procedure Act, a court can detain a defendant for up to two months for trial purposes, but this period can be extended twice for two months each, based on the court’s judgment.
With Yoo Ah In’s first appeal trial set for the 29th, his detention period has been renewed, meaning he will remain in custody during the proceedings.
Yoo Ah In was initially charged with drug offenses in February last year. He is accused of administering medical drugs such as propofol 181 times between September 2020 and March 2022 at hospitals in Seoul, under the pretext of receiving sedation for cosmetic procedures.
So far, Yoo Ah In has admitted to some charges, including smoking marijuana and administering propofol, but has denied others such as instructing marijuana use, evidence tampering, aiding in drug law violations, and fleeing abroad.
In July, prosecutors sought a four-year prison sentence for Yoo Ah In. Last month, during the first trial on the 3rd, he was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 2 million won.
Following the ruling, prosecutors appealed, claiming the sentence was too lenient, and Yoo Ah In is now preparing for his first appeal trial on the 29th.
