Popular Korean Actress Addresses Rumors Of Coming From A Wealthy Family Background

Actress Cha Joo Young has addressed rumors of being from a wealthy financial background.

On The most recent broadcast of tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block” (“You Quiz”), Cha Joo Young appeared as part of the “No.1 in Popularity” special and took the opportunity to clear up speculation about her family’s financial status.

During the show, Cha Joo Young shared that she studied business administration in the U.S. As a former international student, she recalled, “I lived in a rural place called Utah. So, Joo Young studied business at Utah State University in the U.S. and also studied abroad in Malaysia during middle school.”

Co-host Jo Se Ho then brought up the rumors, saying, “There are talks that you come from a wealthy family.”

In response, Cha Joo Young denied the claims, saying, “That’s not true at all. It is true that my father worked in the financial sector, and many of my relatives were also in finance. Because of that, I naturally assumed I would follow the same path—I thought it looked cool. But I didn’t study abroad because I wanted to. I was actually pursuing ballet, and then suddenly, within a week, I was sent abroad.”

She continued, “I thought I was going to the U.S., but suddenly, they told me to go to Malaysia. I asked, ‘Why?’ and before I knew it, I was in Malaysia. The reason was that, since I was eventually going to study in the U.S. or the U.K., my family wanted me to experience the Southeast Asian market and the Asian market firsthand before heading there.”

Reflecting on her time filming “The Queen Who Crowns,” Cha Joo Young recalled, “There were moments when I just wanted to run away from the set. I started confidently, thinking, ‘Trust me and follow my lead,’ but at some point, I didn’t even know what I was doing anymore. My paternal grandmother, who has now passed away, was from the Min family—just like Queen Wongyeong in history. I thought, ‘If I can capture the essence of my grandmother in my performance, that would be great.’ Whenever I felt lost, I kept thinking, ‘Grandmother, please help me.’ That’s how I got through it.”
