The Korean Godfather Of Comedy Comedian Jeon Yoo Sung Passes Away
Comedian Jeon Yoo Sung, often called the “godfather of comedy,” has passed away due to complications from pneumothorax at the age of 76.
According to the entertainment industry, Jeon Yoo Sung passed away at 9:05 p.m. on the 25th of September while receiving treatment at Jeonbuk National University Hospital in Jeonju.
He underwent surgery for pneumothorax in July, but continued to experience breathing difficulties and was recently hospitalized again. Despite receiving treatment, he ultimately did not recover. Earlier in the day, reports emerged that Jeon was in critical condition, wearing an oxygen mask, and had left words for his daughter. His side explained at the time, “It’s true that his health wasn’t good due to his age, but medical staff usually speak in terms of worst-case scenarios.” His passing has now brought great sorrow.
In August, he had been scheduled to appear at the side event “Comedy Book Concert” of the Busan International Comedy Festival, but withdrew two weeks prior due to poor health.
Jeon Yoo Sung debuted in 1969 as a writer for TBC’s “Show Show Show.” He is also credited as the first person to introduce the word “gagman” during a time when performers were simply referred to as comedians or comic actors.
In 2019, he marked his 50th anniversary with a nationwide tour, actively engaging in the comedy scene. However, more recently, concerns about his health arose after he appeared visibly gaunt in comedian Cho Hye Ryun’s social media post.
His funeral will be held as a comedian’s funeral, with the mortuary set up at Asan Medical Center in Seoul.
