One Of The Biggest Korean YouTubers Issues Apology Over Promotion Of Postpartum Care Center, Why?
Travel YouTuber and broadcaster Kwak Tube has bowed his head in apology over the recent postpartum care center sponsorship controversy and also shared news of a donation.
On the 10th of April, he posted a lengthy apology on his SNS, saying, “As a family member of a public official, I deeply realize that I should have acted more carefully.”
The controversy began on the 1st of April. Kwak Tube posted a photo holding his son at a postpartum care center with the label “sponsored,” but suddenly deleted that wording on the 7th. His agency SM C&C explained, “It was not a full sponsorship, only a room upgrade benefit,” but suspicions arose over a possible violation of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, as his wife—who is a public official—was considered the actual beneficiary. The cost of the room upgrade at the facility was reportedly high, ranging from about 3.6 million won [$2,423] to 18.1 million won [$12,184].
In his apology, Kwak Tube stated, “According to legal consultation, it was confirmed that the sponsorship was a private contract between me and the care center and was unrelated to my spouse’s duties,” but added, “Regardless of the reason, I reflect on my lack of consideration.” He revealed that he has paid the full difference for the sponsored benefits and decided to donate 30 million won [$20,195] to support single mothers.
Under the current Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, public officials are prohibited from receiving money or valuables exceeding 1 million won at a time from the same person, even if unrelated to their duties. As experts remain divided on whether this case is a private marketing contract or an indirect benefit to a public official’s spouse, Kwak Tube stated, “If there are any procedural matters required in the future, I will faithfully explain them,” showing a responsible stance.
Kwak Tube, who married his public official wife in October last year and welcomed a son on the 24th of last month, promised to reflect more deeply on social responsibility following this incident.
