Lee Joon Admits To Lying On TV About Buying A Home For His Parents
Actor Lee Joon candidly opened up about his difficult childhood and the reason behind a “lie” he told after providing a home for his parents.
On the most recent broadcast of You Quiz on the Block, Lee Joon shared stories about the financial hardships he experienced during his school years and his time as a dance trainee.
Host Yoo Jae Suk mentioned that Lee Joon had practically lived in his school’s practice room during high school. A graduate of the dance department at Seoul Arts High School and later Korea National University of Arts, Lee Joon was once considered one of the most promising young talents in the dance world.
However, behind those impressive credentials was a difficult reality. “I hid inside one of those long lockers that a person can fit into. After the security guard finished his rounds, I’d come out, practice dancing in the dark rehearsal room, and sleep there.”
He also revealed the harsh living conditions he endured at home, “Our family was struggling financially back then. There were so many cockroaches in our house. I still haven’t gotten rid of one habit—I always lift up the pillow when I stay somewhere.”
He continued, “Back then, there were always about four cockroaches under my pillow. When I went to the bathroom to brush my teeth, there would even be cockroaches on the toothbrush bristles.”
Lee Joon shared that the house still exists today, “Sometimes I go back there, and it feels like I’ve returned to that time in my life. My current home is really nice, but I still feel like I’m the same person I was back then. Sometimes I wonder if I really deserve to enjoy all of this.”
He also recalled fulfilling a childhood dream by providing a better home for his parents. Lee Joon revealed that when he was around 24 years old, he arranged for his parents to live in a three-bedroom apartment. However, he admitted that it wasn’t actually purchased. “To be honest, it was a rental under Korea’s jeonse system,” he said.
He explained, “We had lived through such difficult times, and there were people who pitied us or looked down on us. So I wanted to show that I had become successful. That’s why I told people I had bought it.”
In response, Yoo Jae Suk reassured him, saying that securing a jeonse apartment for his parents in his early twenties was an impressive accomplishment in itself and that his parents must have been incredibly proud.
Lee Joon reflected, “It was the kind of home I had dreamed about since I was young—a house with a living room, three bedrooms, and wooden floors. I was so happy at the time that I even wanted to show it on television.”
His sincere and honest reflections on his difficult past have drawn support and encouragement from viewers.
