Yoo Ji Tae Reveals He Prefers Playing Villain Over Romance Roles
Actor Yoo Ji Tae revealed why he insists on playing villains instead of romance roles.
On the most recent broadcast of tvN variety show “You Quiz on the Block,” actor Yoo Ji Tae appeared.
Yoo Ji Tae, who rose to ten-million-viewer status with his role as Han Myeong Hoe in “The King’s Warden ,” said, “When I first read the script, I felt a certain Han Myeong Hoe. The Han Myeong Hoe that had been portrayed before seemed sly and sarcastic, right? Historical records suggested he had a strong, commanding presence, and that was proposed to me. I thought if I did it well, I could create a different Han Myeong Hoe. I thought it could be an opportunity for transformation.”
About his family’s reactions after the success of the movie, Yoo Ji Tae laughed, “My wife said other people told her the movie was amazing but that I looked so hateful. My son heard from people around him that ‘Dad was really scary.’”
The reason he often appears in villain roles rather than romance is because of his wife Kim Hyo Jin. Yoo Ji Tae said, “Romance roles feel too idealized. Since I am a serious actor and immerse myself fully in my roles, doing a deep romance would be too exhausting, so villains are better.”
Yoo Ji Tae, who is a third-year acting professor at Konkuk University, became department head this year. He humbly said, “The title is department head, but really it means cleaning the school and supporting things behind the scenes.”
He also shared advice for his students, “Many came to the acting department thinking that just by entering, they would become actors. Once they realize that they have to fight for it themselves, anxiety sets in. I don’t want you to live as actors who wait for others to give you work. I want you to be actors who claim your opportunities. If you wait for someone to give you work, you might accept mistreatment. That’s why I make them write, and if there’s no work, make your own films—even a 3 million won film.”
