MAMAMOO’s Hwasa has opened up about her feelings following the controversy over an allegedly obscene performance.

On the July 13 broadcast of KBS2’s Crazy Rich Koreans, Hwasa shared her thoughts on the public backlash she faced during a university festival performance.

in 2023, Hwasa was reported to police due to a provocative performance at a college event. The police later decided not to pursue the case after reviewing statements from both the complainant and Hwasa.

Recalling that time, Hwasa said, “When the criticism peaked, my mom texted me for the first time and asked, ‘Are you okay, my daughter?’” She added, “That message felt like it tore my heart apart.. Even my parents didn’t understand me growing up. I told my mom, ‘If even you didn’t understand me when I was young, how could others?’ Then my mom said, ‘That’s true. I’m proud of you, my daughter,’” she said with a bittersweet tone.

Hwasa also revealed that she suffered from panic symptoms after the controversy. “At the airport in Turkey, I suddenly felt unstable. The other members hugged me all at once—no exaggeration. That’s when I broke down in tears,” she said. “They might not even remember, but I could feel they instinctively wanted to protect me,” she added, expressing her gratitude.

In a separate interview with the production team, Hwasa said, “I’m human too, and I have moments of instability. I don’t even know why—it just suddenly feels hard to breathe. But whenever it happens, someone hugging me helps calm that anxiety.”
