More Than 100 Personnel Deployed To Investigate What Turned Out To Be A False Bomb Threat Made Against A Popular Kpop Group’s Concert + More Details From Police
The group The Boyz ended up starting their concert two hours late on the day of the event due to a false bomb threat.
According to police and fire authorities, at around 2:00 p.m. on the 10th of August, the Korea Sports Industry Development Corp., located within Olympic Park, received a fax claiming that a bomb had been planted at the KSPO DOME. In response, police and fire departments launched a joint operation and conducted an internal safety inspection.
The police deployed 57 personnel, including members of the mobile patrol unit and the SWAT team, and searched the stadium for about an hour. Approximately 2,000 visitors were evacuated, and the site was placed under control. The fire department mobilized 78 personnel and 19 pieces of equipment for the joint operation.
No explosives were found. Police and fire authorities concluded the search at around 4:22 p.m. and lifted the site restrictions.
The fax had been sent from a Japanese international number. Police are treating the incident as a “Japan-originated threat fax case” and are tracing the sender.
A document presumed to be the Japanese threat fax, circulated online, shows the sender identifying themselves as a lawyer and including phrases such as “many people will die” and “I have no choice but to commit a terrorist act.” Japanese translations of these statements were written at the bottom of the document.
Following the safety inspection, the Korea Sports Industry Development Corp. announced: “Regarding the KSPO DOME bomb threat report, police and fire department safety inspections found no abnormalities, and the situation has concluded. For inquiries about today’s performance, please contact the event organizer.”
The Boyz were scheduled to hold their “THE BOYZ – THE BLAZE WORLD TOUR in SEOUL” concert at 4:00 p.m. that day. However, due to the sudden bomb threat, their agency announced, “The start time of the August 10th performance has been postponed to 6:00 p.m.”
The agency added, “We apologize for the delay in notice due to the safety inspection, but as the inspection is now complete, the house will open from 4:45 p.m. We apologize once again for making you wait in the hot weather and would like to let you know that cold water is being distributed around the venue.”
