Actor Jang Dong Ju Causes Immense Concern With Body Mutilation Photos, Posts Concerning Messages
Actor Jang Dong Ju has raised concern after engaging in extreme behavior.
On the 22nd of May, Jang Dong Joo posted a shocking video in which he cut off his own little finger, along with a message that has since concerned fans.
In the post, he wrote: “I cut off my innocent little finger. It represents countless promises I made and failed to keep to myself, my family, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues. Most of all, the promise I made with my father, sealing it with a pinky promise, which I also failed to keep. I ended up hating this finger that holds all those broken promises, so I cut it off. I will use this crisis as an opportunity to find my original self from two years ago. I need to wake up. This is my last chance. There is nowhere lower to go from here.”
He added, “I sincerely apologize for uploading a video showing self-harm. This was not intended to threaten anyone or suggest an extreme choice, but rather a way to engrave in my mind a commitment to correct my life. I am currently receiving treatment and support for recovery with my family and trying to regain my stability.”
Previously, Jang Dong Joo had worried fans after suddenly going missing from public view last year. In January, he revealed that he had been the victim of phone hacking and blackmail, which led to debts amounting to tens of billions of won. He later said he intended to repay money borrowed from acquaintances as quickly as possible, but on the 15th he suddenly announced his retirement.
He stated, “With the help of my family and acquaintances, I have repaid over 3 billion won out of approximately 4 billion won in total debt, leaving about 700–800 million won remaining. I believed that under constant financial pressure, it was impossible to continue normal acting activities, which is why I decided to retire.”
However, this decision was not made in consultation with his agency. On the 17th, his agency Management W stated, “The recently reported retirement announcement was made unilaterally by the actor without any prior discussion with the company,” adding that it was “a highly irresponsible act that violates trust and duty during an active contract period, and all responsibility for the resulting confusion and damage lies entirely with the actor.”
The agency further stated, “We believe the trust relationship with Jang Dong Joo has reached a level that is effectively impossible to restore,” and added that it will carefully review all matters, including whether to maintain his exclusive contract going forward.
