“Squid Game” Director Says Season 3 Will Be Better, Talks Hectic Filming For 2nd Season
Director Hwang Dong Hyuk of “Squid Game” expressed confidence regarding Season 3.
On the 26th (local time) of December, AP News released an interview with director Hwang Dong Hyuk. In the interview, Hwang stated, “There were so many cast members in Seasons 2 and 3 of ‘Squid Game,’ and managing people on set was incredibly challenging. On the day a character died, I would tell the actor, ‘I’m sad because I won’t see you tomorrow,’ but inwardly, I was smiling.”
Fifteen years ago, director Hwang envisioned “Squid Game” as a movie but failed to gain support from investors and actors. After moving the project to Netflix, it sparked a global phenomenon. He shared, “I never imagined ‘Squid Game’ would become such a massive project.”

Through “Squid Game,” he said, “I learned that you should never give up. If you love something and want to create it, even if not immediately, an opportunity may come later. That idea could also become a source of inspiration.”
Regarding the already filmed Seasons 2 and 3, Hwang stated, “There are more characters, especially younger ones. When creating Season 1, I thought it would be extremely difficult for people in their 20s and 30s to live with debt. I assumed participants in the ‘Squid Game’ would need to be at least middle-aged to join because of financial desperation. However, the world has changed. Today, young people struggle to find stable jobs, and no matter how hard they work, they cannot reach the middle class. They invest in cryptocurrency and turn to online gambling to hit the jackpot. I wanted to portray how society really is today.”

Meanwhile, “Squid Game” Season 2 which was released on December 26 depicts the intense showdown between “Gi Hun” (played by Lee Jung Jae), who returns to the game seeking revenge, and the “Frontman” (played by Lee Byung Hun), along with the true game restarting. Season 3 will be released next year.
