“Dear Hongrang” Ending Explained

Netflix has released all the new episodes of its newest Kdrama “Dear Hongrang” earlier today. Let us recap the final episode and explain the ending!

The woman who used to serve Hongrang comes clean and explains to everyone what happened the night Hongrang died.

She says it was after Jae-Yi and Hongrang held a ritual for Lady Ha. Thus, Min Yeon-Ui threw a fit and then hired someone to cast a spell on Jae-Yi hoping she’d die. Hongrang sees the talisman with her name on it and tries to retrieve it from a high place, thus, he falls and hits his head on a rock.

The woman who used to serve him sees this and then sees Yeon-Ui welcoming lady Gwigokja. The servant moves him out of sight, and when she returned, he wasn’t there. We find out that lady Gwigokja asked for her servant to remove him.

As the family sees the remains of Hongrang, Yeon-Ui loses it as she’s told to hold a funeral. She has a fight with Jae Yi as she refuses to accept her son’s dead.

At hongrang’s grave, the fake Hongrang stands by Jae Yi side and tells her to say goodbye to her brother.

The crazy Prince Hanpyeong tells Mu-Jin to kill the black clad swordmen who ruined his vision and bring him the fake Hongrang. However, Mu Jin wants to kill him. As he exists the prince’s location, he sees all the men he drew on as live canvas suffering from severe trauma and some of them dying, we learn that Hongrang will also die soon.

After spending the night together, when Hongrang wakes up, he begins to lose his vision. Jae Yi notices this and goes to the market searching for a cure for him. While in the market, she sees Mu Jin who tells her her husband is as good as dead but she refuses to accept its despite seeing it for herself.

Soon, in the headquarters of the assassins, Kkot-nim is attacked by Sim Yeol-Guk and his men who found out where the imposter Hongrang is. He finds out she’s alive as she tells him the swords he sent them killed the child inside her.

At the place, Sim Yeol-Guk and Mu Jin face each other and Sim Yeol-Guk finds out he has a mule by his side, he kills him.

As the soul reaper [the fake hongrang] returns, he sees his people dead. Jae Yi sees him and he explains he must end this madness and tells him she knows he’s not well. He goes to the shrine of Hongrang’s grandfather and retrieves the deed. On his way out, he sees Yeon-Ui and tells her he’s not her son and explains she left his mother for dead. She loses her mind figuring out that Hongrang is indeed dead.

Jae Yi goes to the market the next day and reports Sim Yeol-Guk for his crimes. He is not happy about it.

Mu Jin makes a bunch of arrests to draw out the soul reaper but instead when he returns to Prince Hanpyeong’s headquarters, he says he’s come across Jae Yi and has her with him, he tells him to kill her.

In his headquarters, Kkot-nim shows up and Sim Yeol-Guk gets up to kill her with his sword but gets ambushed, she draws a gun at him as he tries to explain how he was attempting to protect her. Eventually, she shoots him dead.

In Prince Hanpyeong’s headquarters, Jae Yi is fighting for her life as she’s about to be killed but Mu Jin saves her and tries to escort her outside. As they try to exit the place, Mu Jin is badly hurt and injured fighting others off. He sends her off saying he can finally rest in peace.

He dies shortly after as he exists the place with bad injuries to his body as his servant assures him he’ll care for Jae Yi.

The soul reaper [fake Hongrang] finally shows up and sees Jae Yi, he hugs and kisses her and tells her to go and take the kids with her.

He then makes his way to Prince Hanpyeong’s headquarters where they argue as he calls him crazy and a lunatic, he then chops off both his hands so he can’t draw anymore as he goes on about how he’s god and created them and made them better. Then, the soul reaper fights his men and is badly injured but kills them, he then returns to the prince and slashes his head killing him.

As he exists, Jae Yi is waiting there for him. He loses his vision and barely makes it there. She hugs him as he talks about how she saved him and how he wanted to live now. She assures him he’ll be ok and she’ll be there for him. He rests on her lap as she goes on about what they can do now, he dies in her arms.

2 years later

The kids who were kidnapped by the prince now live a good happy life. Min Yeon-Ui has lost her mind as that lady serves her lying to her that Hongrang will return soon.

At night, Jae Yi sits on top of the rooftop where she usually sits, she hears his voice, then she imagines a snowy field reuniting with her lover.
