“Family Plan”/ “Family Matters” Ending Explained

Coupang Play’s drama “Family Plan”/ “Family Matters” has concluded its run earlier today, let us take a look at the drama’s final episode, and explain the ending!

“Family Plan”/ “Family Matters” episode 6 recap

The episode begins with a young Young-Soo who sees a kid her age after he killed people. Her mother tells her he’s beyond ruined because of what her boyfriend did.

She wakes up and realizes that the pastor is that kid from the training. She goes there to confront and kill him. Chul-Hee realizes this and tries to give her a sedative but she gives it to him instead, he passes out.

She goes to the church and sees him there, she brings the dog with her too [sadly]. He takes out photographs and it turns out he’s always had his eyes on her and was always watching her.

She tries to catch a spell on him and repeat the words ‘attention’ but it doesn’t work, its because his ear was cut, her husband cut it at the time [refer back to what the mother said above]. Thus, he does not get hypnotized by her.

He tells her to either tie herself or watch him kill the dog. She ties herself, he lets the dog go.

Chul-Hee arrives outside and sees Mi-Ok, one of the delinquent kids, who turns out to be the pastor’s daughter. She stabs him before he goes inside.

Meanwhile, Jae-Gon, who is also the pastor’s son, calls Ji-Woo saying they should fight or he’ll report her. She agrees to meet him, her brother goes with her too. Their grandpa doesn’t stop them.

Ji-Hoon tells her he’ll take care of him and reveals his father had been training him, however, he’s not as strong as Ji-Woo and he doesn’t want that kid to die either. So they fight and he wins despite getting some scratches.

Mi-Ok shows up again and wants to fight Ji-Woo, so she does. She reveals this is a test to see if their powers awaken and they’re now being compared, hinting at mother’s involvement.

Ji-Woo fights her as she rages from within and she almost kills her but her brother stops her.

When the grandpa wakes up, he finds out his leg is tied, his son did this to protect him. However, Jo Hae-Pal showed up with swords and knives looking for them. He sees the grandpa and they talk about whether he’s a stingray or a jellyfish. He says he’s a stingray and then jams a rod into the grandpa’s leg hurting him badly.

The grandpa then takes out a tiny sharp metal and slashes his throat with ease, he dies there.

Young-Soo tries to get away but her hands are nailed to the chair. Her husband shows up injured apologizing for breaking his word. She tries to mobilize the dog to bite the pastor but the pastor kills the dog. [oh god, why]

Chul-Hee then fights the pastor and loses, he gets dragged near her as he apologizes for failing to keep his promise. The pastor then cuts his ear and nails him to the wall, however, we soon discover thats not what happened. Chul-Hee had actually stabbed him in the ear making it open, thus, now he can hear Young-Soo and she said ‘attention.’

He was being manipulated and he nailed himself not her husband. As she’s about to kill him when she makes him go back to reality, the cop interferes and tells her its not worth it. She lets go, he will be punished.

She goes to her husband and we find out that Young-Soo also put him under a spell and said he’d always protect her. While he does seem to love her, we find out his actions and hesitation is because he was fighting what she brainwashed him with, she cries while he bleeds in her arms.

Police show up as the couple leaves and the cop lies saying its not that family.

The parents arrive back to their home as well as the kids who don’t even question why the thug’s dead body is there. They all say they’re hungry so Young-Soo offers to make something.

She gets up and sees their family bracelets and everyone was wearing his. She wears hers too. Then, she gets a call and answers. Turns out its her mother. She asks if everything is fine and we find out that the mother always knew where her daughter was.

The mother says something odd, that truth is always closer than she thinks it is and that she’s not after her. The mother was looking at their place while phoning her daughter. “I guess the family matters are going according to plan.”

Young-Soo asks what she means and the mother says, ‘this is all a plan you thought of from the beginning… our real family matters.’

THAT WAS AWESOME. Loved it.

This was such a pleasant surprise and a good way to end a very mediocre year for kdramas. Coupang play has had some projects that piqued my interest in the past and they’re generally well produced, but this one, this one might take the cake in terms of everything, directing, writing and acting. Loved it.

Loved Doona’s acting in this project and her character’s sweet but odd charms. She’s truly the pillar of this family and I couldn’t be happier with the character’s writing or performance.

Actually, there is a lot of subtle things you need to pay attention to watching this drama. The husband did seem odd with his fixation for his wife and it turns out she brainwashed him, sorta. That was a clever, it shows just how vulnerable she felt and it kinda paints her in a different light. She’s nice but definitely damaged and it makes sense considering what she went through.

This also makes me wonder whats real and whats not. Young Soo doesn’t remember everything she’s done and its not out of the ordinary to think she’d also brainwash her family if she felt the need to, so does this mean the mother used her to make the ultimate killer family or was she trying to truly cosplay as a mom and have a family of her own?

And could it be that the mother still has a massive effect on her?

Honestly, love all the possibilities this could mean. Wish they’d return with a longer 2^nd season. Just when you wish a Kdrama was longer, its not. This one deserved to be much longer.
