“Notes from the Last Row” ending explained- why did Lee Kang target Mun-Oh?

Lee Kang questions Mun-oh in a call if this is a fabrication, which Mun-oh pushes back on and says its not. Ultimately, Lee Kang refuses to write it and tells Mun-oh to write it himself. Thus, Mun-oh stays up all night wrapping up the story. He wakes up happy with it and gets an urgent call from Lee Kang, who is yelling at him.

Lee Kang called over 13 times. He explained to Mun-oh that Se Yun called him urgently, and it seemed he will be killed by his dad because he figured out his secret. Kang says he’d love to go there, but he’s far from Seoul, and it’ll take time. Mun-oh goes there first, and a police car follows behind him because he’s speeding.

He gets to the house and finds the fire department waiting around, and there is no fire. He keeps slamming the door, asking them to save his Eun Ju when suddenly Eun Ju, along with her husband and son, show up. They’re baffled by his actions. It turns out none of this happened.

Mun-oh is furious; he’s seething and drives back, thinking about how he’s been tricked. He drives back and sees Kang and chases after him, but loses him.

When he gets back home, he sees his wife is preparing to leave with the suitcase ready. He sees two wine glasses and the bed unmade, he immediately believes she slept with Kang. She makes matters worse as she tells him Kang is not a kid, but an adult. She reveals she met up with him few times over drinks, and he discussed her husband’s issues, including how his original story was not about her. She says they became friends and met several times after that.

He asks if she slept with him, but she does not answer and leaves.

Then, his friend from college calls him and reveals he’s been targeted in an anonymous post that exposes him. The post was obviously written by Kang, who attached the script Mun-oh was working on earlier today.

Mun-oh ultimately loses everything. The university holds a committee and are not convinced he was tricked by a kid. They ask that if its true, why did he do it? Mun-oh can’t answer why because he does not know.

A while later, Kang reaches out to Mun-oh to finally explain why he tricked him and ruined his life. Kang reveals that they first met 12 years ago at the orphanage. Back then, Mun-oh spoke to him and made him feel comfortable enough to share about how he’s now missing his parents, who left him. He came to the orphanage with his wife because his mood was bad at the time.

When their sessions with the kids were over, a young 8-year-old Kang wants to send letters to Mun-oh, and his wife tells him that. Mun-oh then asks why she gave him their address and that if he sends letters, he wont read them.

He reveals he talked to him, thinking he might help inspire his writing but it turned out both his parents died in a truck accident, and his story was just “the same old sob story, nothing new”

His wife pushes back, saying the kids have been through a lot. Mun-oh says a story needs to be riveting and he’ll cut the kid off on his own later. Kang happens to hear this, and his heart shatters.

Then, Kang grows up and becomes a student at the same university. He meets Se Yun there and is initially not interested in him until he overhears him talk about how his dad knows him. In the letter, Kang reveals the accident was just a lucky coincidence that helped fuel this event more. Which means everything he told was a lie.

Mun-oh laughs reading this.

A while later

Mun-oh now works at a library and a man returns an old book, its Kang, he tells Mun-oh he’d like to resume their old literature lessons, now he has a story he wants to write about. Mun Oh asks, “what story?” Lee Kang starts to smile
