The episode begins with Wongyeong caring for her sick son seongnyeong who contracted smallpox. The disease is very deadly back in the day, so the little child struggles badly.

The king has to serve his people so he leaves Wongyeong with their son and they continue to try their best to cure him but eventually, the kid passes away.

Princess Chae-Ryeong discovers some herbal tea thats likely been contaminated and asks who’s behind it. She’s told somebody from Court Lady Kim’s side supplied it.

When the little child dies, the crown prince was out hunting, as he hears of the news he rushes back and his father cries in his arms saying, “Are you even human? Are you truly his brother?”

The royal palace subjects want Yi Je, Grand Prince Yangnyeong dethroned due to various issues surrounding him, thus, he accepts and is withdrawn. Initially, the king wants to appoint his eldest son as the future king but the queen thinks otherwise, she has her eyes on Yi Do, Grand Prince Chungnyeong. He initially tells his mother he wants to be the crown prince’s teacher but she confronts him about his ambition.

Due to the king’s commitments and customs, he’s unable to see the burial of his child so Yi Je does all the preparations and leads it till the end receiving praise from his mother.

Princess Chae-Ryeong confronts Court Lady Kim who is shocked she’s now on the queen’s side. She tries to deny anything happening or trying to poison the queen but Chae-Ryeong disposes of her.

The queen wants Yi Do as the future king so she summons Yi Je who in turn promises his father to not cause issues and not resent him for dethroning him. He promises no bad blood between the brothers anymore. After that, the queen asks Yi Do to make up his mind and visit his father with the answer. He eventually agrees to this.

Yi Do is now named King Sejong and ascends to the throne, he does a good job and looks after the people as much as he can. His father had also asked him to look into Min Mu-Gu and the rest of the family’s case and he obliged.

The former queen and king have tea together and decide to visit Gaegyeong together. But the next day, the former king finds out that Wongyeong is sick with malaria. However, she insists on visiting the place so they go with her trying their best to stabilize her.

They move from one place to the other and the king orders a cure, those who find it shall be rewarded. However, they’re late and she continues to get sicker.

In the end, Wongyeong and Yi Bang Won shared their final moments together, he had her escorted back to the palace as she nears the end of her life. The current king carries his mother atop a mountain.

The drama closed with a touching scene of King Sejong performing a traditional mask dance, while Wongyeong watched with tears of joy, proud of the new world they had built together as she slowly closes her eyes.
