“The Scarecrow” Ending Explained

Gi Hwan is pissed after the prosecutor talked to him. Tae Joo visits him in jail and tries to convince him to testify against the former prosecutors for this case. Seok Man’s case gets brought up and he suggests he testifies in it.

At his trial, Seok Man testifies he was abused by police. The police officials all deny it flatly. Tae Joo also testifies and says he was indeed abused. He names the police officers in the case that previously denied it. He brings up Gi Hwan and how he could serve as a witness. The prosecution tries to push back but the judge allows it.

After the trial, Young-Bum meets with one of the police officers who were also coered during the investigation. He names Cha Si Yeong as the prosecutor who coerced him during the investigation.

Ji Won reunites with Tae Joo after 30 years. He explains why he left and says he’s back to make things right again. Then, she and her team begin working on the case to help Tae Joo bring them to justice.

Tae Joo speaks to Gi Hwan who is excited about it. The two are teaming up and the headline would read so making people buzz about it. Then, Ji Won also meets up with Gi Hwan. She asks him one question before the interview, “why did you stand by when your brother was being tortured?” he says he genuinely believed he’d be out because he knew he was not the killer. She tells him its what he believes and she wonders whether his son would agree. She then airs the interview and also interviews Tae Joo who goes on to spill their names online. He gets interrupted and Ji Won is scared for him. She only now reunited with him and does not want to lose him again.

Sun Young confronts Si Yeong angrily. She holds him by the collar and her son stops her. They both leave. They visit Gi Beom’s resting place and his mother reveals that Tae Joo is his maternal uncle. Young Beom confronts his uncle Si Yeong and tells him he’ll remain by his side but he has to confess to his wrongdoings.

At the trial, Tae Joo and Si Yeong reunite. Tae Joo says he now knows that it was his own fear of not being accepted that explained why he bullied him and more and why they drifted is partly because of that. He tries to shake his hands thinking he’s going to set things right but he doesn’t. At the trial, he lies again and says no torture happened. His testimony goes well during the trial but after it, Young Beom tells him he’s not going to be by his side again and they’re over. Si Yeong sheds tears hearing that because he said as long as he’s by his side, all is okay.

Gi Hwan shows up as a witness on another day and vividly remembers what happened. He retells it well but does not apologize to the man who was wronged. The judge then ends up ruling in his favor stating he was wrongly imprisoned for 20 years. Lawsuits have been filed against the police officers who concealed the body and more will follow.

Si Yeong’s wife also ends up sort of leaving him and complaining about him. He has no one left by his side.

Later, Tae Joo feels the wrath of the people disappointed in him. Young Beom shows up and tries to clean up after people’s visible complaints at his office but he says its fine and it should begin with him. He also reveals his own mother is running around for Tae Joo because he’s also being sued.

Tae Joo meets up with Gi Hwan one last time and says he’s no longer the person in charge of the case. Gi Hwan tries to revel in the fact they brought something to justice but he reminds him he’s a killer and how all of this started with him. As he leaves, Gi Hwan asks if there is a possibility that he comes visit him as a friend instead of a profiler. He says that if he does repent for all the damage he’s done to people, he might consider it.

The cases against the others are ongoing with no end in sight because of the statue of limitation but the fight will continue.

Tae Joo has a beautiful dream where everything was back to that time over 30 years ago. He tells Ji Won about it. They talk about how things would’ve been if nothing of that happened, how everyone would still be together.
