Famous Comedian Who Disowned Adopted Child After Divorce From Her Mother Explains Decision In More Details

Comedian Kim Byung Man has issued a follow-up statement regarding his previous official position on the annulment of his adoption of his ex-wife A’s daughter, B, saying that he hopes B will not be hurt by the matter.

On August 8, the Seoul Family Court ruled in favor of Kim Byung Man in the annulment of adoption case he filed against B. Kim married A, who is seven years older, in 2010 and adopted her daughter B as his own.

A “full adoption” legally recognizes the adopted child as the child of the adoptive parents, ending the legal relationship with the biological parents and taking the surname and family origin of the adoptive parents. However, during his divorce proceedings with A in 2020, Kim also filed for annulment of adoption.

At that time, Kim filed the annulment suit twice, but both were dismissed because B did not want it. In November 2024, he filed the third annulment suit. Before the ruling, B filed a paternity suit against Kim in the Seoul Family Court, claiming that he had a child out of wedlock during his marriage with A.

Kim acknowledged that he and his fiancée have two children but explained, “We had children after the marriage had already broken down.”

After the annulment ruling, Kim released an official statement saying, “The annulment was granted due to the recognition of an immoral act caused by false accusation,” although this phrase was not stated in the judgment. His side later clarified to OSEN that the phrase was their interpretation based on various factors recognized in the annulment, including harm caused by false accusations, and expressed regret if the wording caused confusion.

They also addressed the overall annulment process, saying, “We apologize for the concern caused by negative reports. In 2010, Kim did not hold a wedding ceremony but began married life through marriage registration with A and adopted her then 9-year-old child as his own. In 2012, they began living separately, and in July 2019, a dispute over his income from appearance fees led to divorce proceedings. The first annulment suit was filed in 2020, followed by a second in 2022.”

They continued, “In November 2024, through the third annulment suit, the Seoul Family Court ruled on August 8, 2025, to annul the adoption of the now 25-year-old child based on welfare considerations and mutual incompatibility.”

Kim’s side emphasized, “He only hopes that the child he adopted through marriage registration will no longer be hurt by this ruling.”

Kim married A in 2010 through marriage registration, began living apart in 2012, started divorce proceedings in 2019, and finalized the divorce in 2023.

During the divorce process, A claimed in an interview that Kim had repeatedly committed domestic violence during their marriage and filed a criminal complaint, which was referred to the prosecution. Kim’s side denied the allegations, stating that the domestic violence claims were not accepted in divorce court and that the police forwarded the case to the prosecution with a non-indictment recommendation. The prosecution later cleared Kim of all charges.

Kim and his fiancée, with whom he has two children, will hold their wedding on September 20.
