Jun Hyun Moo Under Fire For Using Inappropriate Slang On Air Regarding Fallen Police Officer, Issues Apology

Broadcaster Jun Hyun Moo apologized for using the inappropriate term “kalppang” while mentioning the story of a police officer on air.

A New variety show “Battle of Fates” is a survival program in which 49 fortune tellers gather to test their abilities through various missions. Jun Hyun Moo serves as an MC on the show. His recent remarks gained immense backlash.

During a segment where shamans were deducing the cause of death of the late Police Officer Lee Jae Hyun, Jun Hyun Moo said, “I saw a bandage. Don’t people commonly call it a ‘kalppang’ [aka knife stabbing]’?” and added, “A uniformed officer, knife stabbing. That’s too direct.” Shindong commented, “The word was too good.”

Kalppang is a harsh slang term used by gangs. The segment went viral and the broadcaster was immensely criticized due to the use of the word. The Korean Police Service Association (KPSA) issued a statement criticizing his comments.

On the 23rd of February, his agency SM C&C ended up issuing an apology on his behalf.

Hello, this is SM C&C.
First, we deeply mourn the lives and dedication of all the deceased individuals mentioned in the broadcast of “Battle Of Fates” and we offer our sincere condolences to the bereaved families.
We feel a heavy responsibility for causing hurt to the deceased and their families due to certain expressions used in the broadcast. Regardless of the context, we should have exercised greater caution when mentioning the deceased.
Jun Hyun Moo repeated certain words while organizing a cast member’s remarks and did not sufficiently examine the appropriateness of the expression. He takes seriously the fact that he failed to show proper respect to the deceased.
We sincerely apologize to the deceased and the bereaved families. We also extend our apologies to all viewers who felt discomfort while watching the broadcast. We will internally review the matter to uphold stricter standards and responsibility and will do our utmost to prevent this from happening again.
Once again, we deeply apologize.
