Taeil Sentenced To Jail For Gang Rape, Sentencing Duration Under Immense Criticism

Former NCT member Taeil taken into custody after being sentenced for gang rape

Taeil has been taken into custody following sentencing for charges related to gang rape.

On the afternoon of July 10, the 26th Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Taeil and two other individuals to three years and six months in prison for violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (specifically, aggravated rape).

Additionally, the court ordered them to complete 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program, register their personal information for public disclosure, and imposed a five-year employment ban at institutions related to children and adolescents.

Taeil had been undergoing trial without detention, but was taken into custody immediately after the sentencing. The court stated, “Since we are handing down a prison sentence, we believe there is a risk of flight, and therefore issue an arrest warrant.”

Taeil was accused of sexually assaulting a victim who was unconscious due to intoxication, along with two accomplices, in June of last year.

At the hearing held on June 18, all three defendants, including Taeil, admitted to the charges, and the prosecution had requested seven years in prison and a ten-year employment ban for each of them.

Previously, SM issued a statement to its Twitter account to announce that Taeil has been implicated in a “criminal case related to sexual crimes.” SM said that after they looked into the situation and realized the severity of the matter, they’ve removed Taeil from NCT and will no longer carry out group activities.

Later, it was reported that Taeil was being investigated for quasi rape along with two other people. SM also terminated his exclusive contract.
