WINNER’s Song Mino Admits To Negligent Military Service, Prosecutors Request A Year And A Half In Prison
Song Mino of the group WINNER, who was put on trial for violating the Military Service Act, admitted to negligent service and expressed his willingness to serve again. However, prosecutors have requested a prison sentence of 1 year and 6 months.
On the 21st of April, the Seoul Western District Court (Criminal Division 10, Judge Sung Joon Gyu) held the first hearing for Song Mino and Mr. Lee, who was responsible for supervising his service. The trial had originally been scheduled for last month but was postponed after Song’s side requested a change in date.
Song Mino is accused of negligence, including unauthorized absences, while serving as a public service worker at a facility in Mapo-gu, Seoul, from March 2023 to December 2024. Mr. Lee, who is also on trial, is accused of failing to properly supervise him despite being aware of the absences.
According to the indictment submitted by prosecutors, Song Mino was absent without authorization for 102 days—about a quarter of his total 430 required service days. Under the Military Service Act, leaving service for more than 8 days without valid reason can result in up to 3 years in prison.
Appearing in court wearing a black suit and glasses, Song Mino told reporters beforehand, “I am reflecting. I’m sorry for disappointing many people. I will sincerely take part in the trial.”
Inside the courtroom, he admitted to all charges. Prosecutors, citing his long-term absences and failure to perform duties, requested a sentence of 1 year and 6 months in prison.
His lawyer argued that at the time, Song was suffering from severe mental distress as well as physical pain, including a cervical disc rupture. The lawyer added that Song had submitted evidence that could be unfavorable to himself during the investigation and asked for leniency so he could fulfill his duty properly if given another chance.

In his final statement, Song Mino bowed his head and said, “I sincerely apologize to everyone. As a young man of South Korea, I failed to faithfully fulfill my duty of national defense.”
He continued, “I suffer from bipolar disorder and panic disorder. I know this should not be used as an excuse. As someone who receives love from many people, I regret showing such a shameful side.”
He added that he is currently receiving treatment and said, “I hope to recover as soon as possible, and if I am given another chance to serve again, I will complete it sincerely.”
